Be Heard for Veterans: A Storytelling Guide for Those Who Served
Help Us Print a Booklet that Helps Veterans Share Their Stories and Find Connection
My name is Denise Leigh Waters. I’m an educator, a storyteller, and most importantly for this project—a wife, daughter, and mom to service members. My husband, Tim, served in the Washington Army National Guard for 21 years, with deployments to Iraq and countless missions at home. He has stories to tell—some hard, some healing, all important. But like many Veterans, he didn’t know where to start.
That’s why we created Be Heard for Veterans, a story-starting workbook made specifically for those who’ve served. It walks Veterans through the process of remembering, shaping, and sharing their experiences with clarity and purpose. We talk about finding your storyteller style, building your audience, and even navigating the tough emotions that can rise during storytelling.
This isn’t just a book—it’s a bridge.
Why We Need This Now
Every day, Veterans around the country wrestle with isolation, identity shifts, and the question of how to reintegrate. We believe storytelling is a powerful tool for healing and connection—not just for Veterans, but for their families, friends, and communities too. When a Veteran tells their story, we all get a little more connected.
But telling your story is hard—especially when you’ve been trained to put others first and minimize your own pain. We created this booklet to say: Your story matters. Let’s help you tell it.
What Your Support Does
We’re raising funds to print 1,000 copies of Be Heard for Veterans and distribute them to VFWs, counseling centers, military families, and community storytelling events. Your support helps cover:
Professional printing and binding
Distribution to local and national Veterans’ groups
Free story circles and workshops for Veterans to gather and share
Tim’s Story—And Thousands More
This project started because my husband wanted to tell his story—but didn’t know how. Now, he’s not alone. We’ve seen firsthand how powerful it is when a Veteran finds their voice. Whether they served in combat or behind the scenes, whether their story is raw or reflective, every story has the power to heal, connect, and inspire.
Let’s give them the tools to begin.

Back this project and be part of a mission that honors service not just with thanks, but with listening. Together, let’s make sure no Veteran’s story goes unheard.
Don’t let them stop talking.
